Ruskin Bond Facts
He created the character of Rusty, an orphaned 16-year-old Anglo-Indian boy living in Dehradun, as an extension of his own childhood experiences. His first book called The Room on the Roof, written at the age of 17 and published at 21, featured Rusty as the adventure-seeking protagonist and was semi-autobiographical in nature.
When he was young, Ruskin dreamt of becoming a tap dancer.
His novel A Flight of Pigeons, which is based on the Indian Rebellion of 1857, was adapted into a Bollywood film titled Junoon (1978). The film was helmed by the veteran director Shyam Benegal and included stars like Shashi Kapoor, Nafisa Ali, Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Jennifer Kendal, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tom Alter, Pearl Padamsee, Deepti Naval, and Sushma Seth.
Bond made his feature film debut with a cameo appearance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) which, in turn, was based on his short story titled Susanna’s Seven Husbands. He appeared as a church father in the film that starred Priyanka Chopra in the lead role.
His other children’s novel titled The Blue Umbrella (1980) was adapted into an eponymous film by Vishal Bhardwaj in 2005. The film garnered mostly positive reviews upon its release and was awarded the National Film Award for ‘Best Children’s Film’ in 2007.
Bond was honored with the Padma Shri, which is India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 1999. Furthermore, he was awarded the country’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan in 2014.
Although he never got married and had a family of his own, Bond adopted a family later in life and spends his twilight years happily living with his adopted family in Landour, Mussoorie.
